Willing to Risk it All
I don't look at what Brian and I are doing as a risk. I don't look at stepping out in God's will as a risk. To me the risk would be not following God's will. The risk would be staying in my comfort zone rather than trust God has something more for me. Sure if I stayed I would be "comfortable". I'm sure things would be less difficult. Things may even seem a little less stressful, but it would be a risk. It would be Brian and I trusting our own plans, our own thoughts over God's plans and thoughts.
I don't know about you but I trust that God knows way more about me, what I'm meant to do with my life, and just life in general. So why would trusting the One who knows way more than me be a risk? Look at it this way if you were sick and all the over the counter/home remedies in the world weren't making you better what would you do? Would you stay home and hope for the best or would you go to the doctor? Chances are you would go to the doctor to receive proper medical care because you aren't a doctor and unable to treat yourself. Now would you consider going to the doctor to be a risk or would you consider staying home and continuing (without success) to get better on your own to be the risk?
I know I know, this example isn't perfect. I'm sure you're thinking "I'm not sick" or "I'm comfortable in my will and His will is uncomfortable so therefore its risky" but your wrong. We are all sick, we are all broken, we are all lost without Christ. We were born into this broken world sinners in need of saving and only He can save us. We can do nothing and I mean absolutely NOTHING to save ourselves. And sure our flesh is comfortable in our own will but our spirit is not. Our flesh wants the immediate satisfaction of sin, our flesh desires to be its own god. But our spirit aches for a Savior, our spirit desires to be reunited with our Creator. Our flesh is comfortable in our will but our spirit is being risked by our fleshes comfort.
Take Peter for example in Matthew 14:22-33. While in the boat with the disciples after been tossed about by the waves through the night they look up to see a figure walking on the water. It was Jesus, once He identified Himself Peter said if it is You then command me to come out on the water with you. He commanded and Peter stepped out. Peter walked on water, but when his faith wavered he began to sink. Now I know your thinking see Peter did risk something by stepping out onto the water,. He risked drowning, he even started to sink! But don't you remember the rest of the story. Peter called out and Jesus pulled him back up. You see there was no risk in trusting and following Jesus only risk in taking your eyes off of Him and trusting yourself. As you follow God there will be times you take your eyes off of Him, times you try to be in control and handle things. And in those times you may begin to sink, but do not fear because if you call back out to Him he will immediately pull you back up allowing you to trust in Him again.
Stepping out in faith, trusting God and His plan is not a risk. Sure it may seem risky, it may even feel risky to our flesh but I promise you it is not. You are not risking anything by following God. Yes it will be hard, yes there will be growing pains, and yes you will learn more about human nature than you would like but you will also learn more about who God is, see His hand at work in amazing ways, and live at peace knowing you are following the One true God.
So what's it going to be? Are you going to risk it all and stay comfortable in your fleshly will or are you going to follow where God leads and be provided all that you need?
